Statement on the Guilty Verdict of Imelda Marcos

Justice is strong, never weak. It might come late, but it will happen. And when it does, as now in the Sandiganbayan finding of guilt in the case of graft against Mrs. Imelda Marcos, we welcome it.

We welcome the verdict not because we desire revenge. We do not; justice is never vindictive.

We welcome the verdict because after a long, overdue judicial process, we finally have on record what we as a people have known from our experience during martial law: that Mrs. Marcos committed corruption, that her family’s wealth is our people’s, and that although the arc of justice extends to years and decades, even the mightiest succumb to it.

Is our judicial system perfect? Far from it! There is much to change, which this verdict encourages us to talk about and act upon. As we do, let us celebrate the making of history. No more myths. Our people deserve the truth.
